Last week we had the honour of sharing our insight at BUILDEX along with another like-minded company, UnBuilders.

The inspiration that prompted this session was called “Deconstruction Through the Lens of Embodied Carbon Reduction”

In this session we discussed;

- connecting the dots between landfill waste and our natural environment

- stats on construction waste which ends up in the landfill

- stats on how long it takes for materials to decompose

- stats on materials in which Sea to Sky Removal diverted from 2017 / 2018

- the type of building materials which are ending up in the landfill

- how can the construction industry become zero waste

- implementing policy to hold manufacturers accountable on non recyclable materials

- the plastic problem, not all plastic is recyclable

- making sure a recycling station is mandatory on construction sites

- what materials can be diverted from the landfill i.e. donated, recycled and reused

Passive House Canada partnered with the City of Vancouver to deliver a series of educational seminars to bring to light the priorities the City has set forth as part of their Climate Emergency

One of the ways City of Vancouver is engaging industry on the solutions to these challenges is they’ve partnered with Passive House Canada to bring the Building to Zero: Solutions Centre to BUILDEX Vancouver.

The content focussed on their 4 priority steps to constructing a Zero Emissions Building:

  1. Design a robust and airtight, high performance envelope

  2. Meet the minimal heating & cooling loads with low carbon mechanical systems

  3. Construct with low upfront / embodied carbon & natural materials

  4. Decarbonize the operation of equipment and appliances
